Gloucester 
 
Gloucester is the county town of Gloucestershire in South West England, and lies on the River Severn. Founded by the Romans in AD 79 Gloucester granted its Royal charter in 1155 by King Henry II. Whilst being a modern city with its shopping centre and facilities, there are still traces of the city’s prior history to be found: the gabled and half-timbered houses surviving from the medieval and Tudor periods, Gloucester Cathedral the burial place of King Edward II- and more recently used as a film location for three films in the Harry Potter series.  
Other historical features include the Norman prior’s chapel, attached to the deanery, and outside Abbey gate in St Mary’s Square, back in 1555, the then Bishop of Gloucester John Hooper was martyred under Queen Mary I.  
Travelling further back in time almost 1900 years, and Roman remains unearthed below street level in the 1970’s may still be seen through a glass observation panel outside the Boots building. Other points of interest include the school of art and science, Gloucester Museum, and there’s also the former county jail (on the site of a Saxon and Norman castle), and Whitefield memorial church too.
